As Arthur Plotnik once said, “We edit to let the fire show through the smoke.” And nothing causes as much irritating smoke as redundant modifiers, pompous language, lethargic nouns and verbs, and idle clutter. Learn and practise some key strategies for combatting wordiness so you can express yourself with clarity and sparkle. Make your readers happy by writing less and meaning more.
The key learning objectives of the webinar are to
- understand how wordiness hinders clear communication,
- recognize the subtle and not-so-subtle qualities of a wordy style, and
- review and practise several techniques for eliminating the unnecessary (based on my handout: A Dozen Excellent Ways to Combat Wordiness).
