Knowing the publishing process (A1) and setting and maintaining realistic schedules (A7) are fundamentals all professional editors need, regardless of which stage they are working, according to Editors Canada’s Professional Editorial Standards. This webinar focuses on scheduling the full publication production process—from receiving finalized or approved content, through editing and document formatting, to print or online distribution and promotion. Participants will learn what needs to be considered when creating a production schedule and how to increase the likelihood of the team being able to meet deadlines. The speaker will provide an Excel spreadsheet with formulas to quickly calculate due dates for each stage, as well as online resources to help estimate and track time. Virginia is a publishing professional with 30 years of experience in writing, editing, desktop publishing and managing newspapers, magazines, journals and websites. Having started her career as a journalist, her skills and hard work earned her a promotion to be the editor of a community newspaper. She has been the managing editor of a nursing and three hobby magazines, as well as an academic and four medical journals. In one position, she created and maintained production schedules for 31 issues of three medical journals and their associated supplements annually, ensuring overlapping deadlines were met.
